About Oley

Oley sits in the center of the Oley Valley, a scenic farm region about 10 miles northeast of Reading. Its setting of creeks, covered bridges, and working fields gives the community a rural pace with quick connections on PA 73, PA 562, and PA 662. The entire township is listed as a National Register historic district, a rare, valley-wide designation.

History

European settlement began in the early 1700s. Oley Township was formed in 1740 and later became part of newly created Berks County in 1752. In 1983 the National Park Service listed the whole township on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its farms, mills, and villages as a cohesive rural landscape. The valley is also tied to frontiersman Daniel Boone, born here in 1734.

Government

Oley is governed as a township by an elected Board of Supervisors that sets policy and budgets while staff manage day-to-day services. Current supervisors and contacts are posted on the official township site.

Culture

Community life revolves around preservation and agriculture. The Oley Valley Community Fair began in the 1940s and still showcases livestock, produce, and homemade foods. Local lore celebrates Mountain Mary (Anna Maria Jung), a folk healer whose story remains central to Berks County, Pennsylvania’s German heritage.
