About Tulpehocken

Tulpehocken is a rural township in Berks County centered on the Tulpehocken Creek and villages such as Rehrersburg and Bernville nearby. The name comes from the Lenape and is often translated as land of the turtles, a reminder of the area’s deep Indigenous and Berks County’s German roots.

History

The Tulpehocken valley became a gateway for Palatine German settlers who moved from Schoharie, New York, in the 1720s. Their farms, churches, mills, and later the Union Canal shaped a landscape now protected in the Tulpehocken Creek Historic District. The region is also linked to diplomat Conrad Weiser, whose homestead stands in nearby Womelsdorf.

Government

Tulpehocken Township operates under a Board of Supervisors with public meetings posted by the township; neighboring Upper Tulpehocken Township uses the same council-manager style of local governance.

Culture

Agricultural fairs, church suppers, and school events knit the community together, while the Tulpehocken Area School District serves five municipalities across the upper valley. Heritage sites, covered lanes, and creekside recreation give the area its small-town pace.

Interesting places

  • Conrad Weiser Homestead (Womelsdorf): State historic site honoring the 18th-century diplomat who shaped colonial Berks County’s frontier relations.
  • Tulpehocken Creek Historic District: Farmsteads, iron heritage at Charming Forge, early churches, and canal remains along the creek corridor.
  • Christ Little Tulpehocken Church: Historic congregation tied to the earliest German settlements in the valley.
  • Blue Marsh Lake Recreation Area: Boating, trails, and birding just down the valley toward Bernville/Lower Heidelberg.

Restaurants & travel

  • Blue Marsh Italian Restaurant (Bernville): Local favorite for pizza, pasta, and gatherings near the lake.
  • Feliciano’s Pizza (Rehrersburg): Neighborhood pies and casual bites right in the village.
  • Getting around: Quick links via US-422 toward Reading/Lebanon, PA-183 through Bernville, and I-78 at Bethel for regional trips.
